St Petersburg Academy of Arts is even older than the United States – it was established nineteen years earlier. The Academy, under the original name the Academy of Three Noblest Arts, was founded by Count Ivan Shuvalov. At the time of its opening everyone who had artistic promise, even peasants, was allowed to attend classes.. Until 1764, all instruction took place at the palace of Count Ivan Shuvalov on Sadovaya Street. However, Catherine the Great later changed the name to the Imperial Academy of Arts and then commissioned a new building that took 25 years to construct. The two magnificent buildings – the Imperial Academy of Arts and the Winter Palace face each other, separated by the famous Neva River. This neoclassic building, that has had many names, nowadays even has 3,000-year-old sphinxes and griffins imported from Egypt.

When the academy began, it sent its most renownd painters to other countries such as France and Italy to study various artistic styles. However, people now travel to the academy from around the world to study the sensitive and poetic art forms innovated by Russia. Nowadays instruction is offered not only in the three noble arts – painting, sculpture and architecture, but also in stone-carving, glass-making, weaving, mosaic and making matryoshkas, the renowned Russian nesting dolls.

ArtTours was founded in 2002 by a few St Petersburg artists and Russian Translator workers who found out that the visitors of the city would like to see not only the classical masterpieces of the Russian art, exhibited in the Hermitage and the Russian Art Museum, but also some examples of the contemporary art and culture of Russia. You can choose to join one of the so-called “master classes” offered by the company: in painting, iconography, sculpture, stained glass, jewelry, art restoration, Russian theater and ballet, or, if you would like you can try one of the two-hour workshops, the Russian Easter eggs painting, for example.

A samba school has more social, festival and party organizational and coordination function than an educative one. Only in Rio more than 50 samba schools are engaged in Mardi Gras or Carnival all the year. In fact, they spend between $500,000 and $1,000,000 on costumes and floats and rehearsing for the participation in a 65-to 80-minute performance that involves up to 5,000 people. Although foreigners are not allowed to participate in the parade on behalf of some Rio’s samba schools, which claim that they don’t know enough Portuguese to learn the songs and will ruin a whole year’s work, not to mention the schools’ chances of staying in the top 14 participating the big two-day parade, other samba schools do not mind to accept Portuguese Translator Services worker’s money in exchange for participating in some less important activities such as costume assembling, drumming, shaking rumps in the parade and other. We can say that schools find such positions around the fringes of the foreign participants that they are almost invisible to the judges. If you can afford it you can choose from a wide variety of wonderful costumes, magnificently ornate with feathers, tassels and sequins.
