St Petersburg Academy of Arts is even older than the United States – it was established nineteen years earlier. The Academy, under the original name the Academy of Three Noblest Arts, was founded by Count Ivan Shuvalov. At the time of its opening everyone who had artistic promise, even peasants, was allowed to attend classes.. Until 1764, all instruction took place at the palace of Count Ivan Shuvalov on Sadovaya Street. However, Catherine the Great later changed the name to the Imperial Academy of Arts and then commissioned a new building that took 25 years to construct. This neoclassic building, that has had many names, nowadays even has 3,000-year-old sphinxes and griffins imported from Egypt.
When the academy began, it sent its most renownd painters to other countries such as France and Italy to study various artistic styles. However, people now travel to the academy from around the world to study the sensitive and poetic art forms innovated by Russia. Nowadays instruction is offered not only in the three noble arts – painting, sculpture and architecture, but also in stone-carving, glass-making, weaving, mosaic and making matryoshkas, the renowned Russian nesting dolls.
