Pros And Cons Of Online Shopping
Posted in Fun Stuff on July 23rd, 2011 by authorThousands of people take advantage of online shopping everyday, so merchants are going to continue to enjoy those benefits. While it has become the preferred way of shopping for many people, one must remember to be careful. Keeping all pros and cons to online shopping in mind will help you to make good choices while shopping.
One of the advantages of online shopping is that you can do it twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You can shop whenever you want, regardless of how you are dressed or what the hours are. You don’t have to worry about a store closing while you are shopping and neither do you have to wait for a store to open.
Of course, one of the disadvantages of online shopping is that you can’t physically see the items. If you know exactly what you want, that isn’t such a big deal. On the other hand, if you are searching for a pair of tennis shoes, you will be given many choices of colors, sizes, styles, prices, etc. It’s difficult to know if the shoes will be correctly or fit correctly without actually trying them on.
Another advantage of online shopping is the ability to shop at several stores with a few minutes time. Let’s say that you are looking for a new watch. You go to one web store and while they have some things that you like, you go over to another website to see what is at another store. There, you find exactly what you are looking for.
Unless you know exactly what you want, you must browse through many we pages to find the item you want, which can be a great disadvantage. If we go back to the example of the watch, you have to go through several pages to find the watch you like. There may be many items featured on one page, but you can’t read the details and read the specifications unless you actually go through all of the items. When in a brick and mortar store, you can look over items quickly and then decide what you want by looking through the merchandise.
An advantage of online shopping is that if you live overseas, you can order things that you might not be able to get in your own country. Using an overseas mail forwarding, you can have your items sent to you via a U.S. address that is assigned to you. This is very helpful as many U.S. merchants won’t do package forwarding to addresses overseas.
One thing to keep in mind with online shopping is that it may be harder to return things. At a ‘real’ store, you can take the item and your receipt to the store and know that you will go back home with your money. When working with an online merchant, you will have to pay the postage to send your item back. You will have to wait awhile for them to receive your returned item and then process the return before you can receive your refund. This could take from two to four weeks.
Payment for items can have both pros and cons depending on the situation. You need an approved debit or credit card when buying items online. This can be great because it’s easy, you don’t have to write a check or have cash on hand. Unfortunately, if you live overseas, many online merchants won’t take international credit cards for payment. If you prefer to pay for things with cash or a check, however, you will have problems buying things online.
Both shopping online and in physical stores are here to stay. People like to have both options because there are advantages to each one. Before deciding which option to use, consider the pros and cons of each one, because every situation is different. Happy shopping!
